Background of the Study
Urban Pidgin in Nigeria has evolved as a vibrant linguistic form, particularly among the youth, reflecting the dynamic interplay of traditional language and modern urban culture. This study appraises the phonological processes that characterize Nigerian urban Pidgin, focusing on aspects such as vowel modulation, consonantal variation, and intonation patterns. These phonological features are critical in conveying identity, emotion, and cultural nuance in everyday interactions (Babatunde, 2023). Urban Pidgin serves as a linguistic bridge among diverse ethnic groups, and its phonetic characteristics provide insights into the ongoing evolution of language in metropolitan settings. By comparing recordings of youth interactions in urban centers, the research identifies common phonological patterns and examines how these features contribute to the distinct sound of urban Pidgin. The study further investigates the influence of digital media and global cultural trends on the phonological evolution of this lingua franca (Adesola, 2024; Okafor, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
Despite the widespread use of urban Pidgin among Nigerian youth, there is limited systematic research on its phonological processes. Variations in vowel and consonant articulation can lead to misunderstandings and affect the effectiveness of communication (Babatunde, 2023). The lack of comprehensive analysis impedes efforts to document the evolution of urban Pidgin and its role in cultural identity formation (Adesola, 2024). Without detailed phonological studies, the impact of global media and technological influences on the sound patterns of urban Pidgin remains underexplored, hindering language preservation and educational initiatives (Okafor, 2025).

Objectives of the Study

  • To document phonological features in urban Pidgin.

  • To compare phonological processes across different urban centers.

  • To assess the impact of cultural and technological influences on these processes.

Research Questions

  • What phonological patterns are characteristic of urban Pidgin?

  • How do these patterns vary across urban areas?

  • What external influences affect the phonology of urban Pidgin?

Significance of the Study
This study provides critical insights into the phonological evolution of Nigerian urban Pidgin, enriching our understanding of youth culture and language adaptation. Its findings will assist linguists, educators, and cultural preservationists in developing strategies to maintain linguistic diversity in urban environments (Babatunde, 2023; Adesola, 2024; Okafor, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to the analysis of phonological processes in Nigerian urban Pidgin and does not cover other language varieties or rural dialects.

Definitions of Terms

  • Phonological Processes: Sound patterns and modifications in language.

  • Urban Pidgin: A creole language widely used in Nigerian urban centers.

  • Youth Culture: The set of cultural practices and linguistic forms prevalent among young people.
